Travel Plans?

According to vascular surgeons, blood clots occur during travel for two reasons —inactivity and dehydration.  There are ways to play it safe to avoid serious health risks that can occur if blood clots break off and travel to the heart or lungs

  1. Take a short walk every two hours.
On an airplane, get up and walk the aisles.  If traveling by car, pull over at a rest stop to move and stretch.
  2. If there is room, elevate your legs while sitting whenever possible.
  3. Stay hydrated
Carry a water bottle with you and drink from it often.
  4. Consider wearing compression stockings
They can be purchased at most drugstores and help keep the blood circulating in the lower legs.

In 2008, the Office of the Surgeon General issued a fact sheet on how to prevent deep vein thrombosis.  Click here for more information.
